Walking the Halls at San Diego Comic Con

By Tony “RadarX” Jones

Describing the 2011 San Diego Comic Con might sound easy, but what can you say about one of the largest conventions in the world?* With an estimated 150,000 attendees packed into an area less than a square mile, it is a complete zoo.* This glorious and remarkable wonderland of geekiness is unsurpassed by any other show.* At first glance, you might be tempted to try to categorize everyone into stereotypes of basement dwellers, complete with body odor so bad you wish you had that goop embalmers slap under their noses. With a closer look, you’ll see people from every walk of life indulging in one of their guiltiest pleasures.

Spending all day walking the halls attending panels is only a small portion of the show.* Various events take place after hours and in hotels all over the Gaslamp section of downtown.* Whether it’s catching an early screening of Cowboys & Aliens or attending a live version of Dr. Horrible’s Singalong Blog, you can be free to mingle among like minded souls.* Even if you don’t want to catch some of the worst Science Fiction movies ever made (this is why they are so awesome), there are tons of parties and restaurants to check out.

Hands down the coolest party for me at Comic Con was the DCUO Fan Event held Saturday night at the Marriott.* Attendees who paid special attention to our Facebook page during the show found a secret word of the day.* Giving this to our team at the SOE booth got them a special VIP card with directions to the party.* Hundreds showed up to enjoy food, drink, and a panel with Executive Producer Lorin Jameson, Game Director Mark Anderson, and Creative Director Jens Andersen.* Everyone had a great time and we were truly thankful for the time we had to spend with fans of the game.

Another really cool part of the show is the dozens of booths selling rare comics, action figures, and other trinkets you wouldn’t find anywhere else but maybe the Internet. From the casual Wonder Woman T-shirts to autographed Firefly toys, you could easily spend a full day just browsing wares. Then there are dozens of Comic Con exclusives, which are sold in such limited quantities you have to show up early to secure one.* Even as strong willed as I can be, it was hard to pass up graphic novels for $5 each.

Because geeks come in so many different flavors, we all have our own favorite movies and TV shows.* It was common to find folks camping out overnight to attend a Twilight panel or others spending 3 – 4 hours in line to see the Game of Thrones cast.* Celebrities galore not only appear for signings but wander the floor.* I literally bumped into Lou Ferrigno in a crowded area full of shoppers.

Finally, the most important part of Comic Con (ok I’m biased) is the gaming.* Dozens of videogame companies show off upcoming games and expansions.* Having a chance to see the upcoming Arkham City was exciting, but the real highlight for us was the new DCUO Fight for the Light DLC demonstration.* I honestly lost count of how many people stopped by to try and stop a prison break in the Oa Sciencells.* It was actually enough to make me feel better about not only knowing what that means, but who each prisoner was.

Check out the webcast we recorded live from the show floor and if you have a chance to make it to 2012 Comic Con, it’s worth it.
