Question: Where in the real life world do you live (city and state)?

Answer:*Houston, Texas, USA. But like the old Johnny Cash songs says, “I’ve been everywhere, man!”

Question: What SOE game(s) do you play?

Answer:*DC Universe Online

Question: How long have you played the above game(s)?

Answer:*Since Launch Day.

Question: What other games do you play?

Answer:*Currently DCUO and Champions Online. I did the whole Warcraft thing from Orcs Vs. Humans all the way to WoW: Cataclysm, but superheroing is in my blood and I’ve left wizards and elves behind for good.

Question: Why would you like to be the SOE Gamer of the Month?

Answer:*That’s a tough one since honestly, I didn’t know the honor existed until I was asked (still new to the SOE community, really). Now that I’ve become more aware, I think it’s a way to bring a little legitimacy to the DCUO PC community. For the most part, we’re still the new kids on the SOE block and this is a great chance to get the word out about the game and our community.

Question: What do you do for a living?

Answer:*Professional graphic artist. My current gig is doing advertisements and marketing material for grocery store chains, although I’ve been in the industry since modern desktop publishing was invented.

Question: How many hours a week do you play video games?

Answer:*During the week, my time is pretty limited, so maybe a half-hour to an hour and a half a day, if I’m lucky. Some days, not at all, depending on my wife, kids, clients, traffic, and/or deadlines. Weekends are a little more flexible. I can usually get in a few hours in the early AM or late nights. On average, all told, I’d guess anywhere from 10-30 hours, again depending on other engagements. I’m not “hardcore” by anyone’s measure.

Question: Tell us about your character.

Answer:*Longhorn Tex is the Unofficial Sheriff of Metropolis. It is his (my) sworn duty to assist, protect, and serve the good people of Metropolis. This usually means helping out players doing bounty runs, answering questions in Shout, running off bad guys, or getting my butt whooped in Open World PVP. Yeah, sadly my PVP skills can’t match my forum post count. Still, I learn new things all the time and since joining the Defenders Alliance (League), I’ve actually sunk a lot of time in PVE ventures that I’d been missing out on. I am still woefully behind the “gear curve” and am working diligently to get caught up.

Question: How did you get into gaming?

Answer:*It all started with text-based adventures as a child of the 70′s, which led into Pong, Space Invaders, and Pac-Man. I owned an original Atari 2600 and pretty much every console since then. Along the way, I discovered table-top role-playing games, and dedicated 30+ years so far to being the best Dungeon Master/Game Referee around. Sometime in the early 90′s I got into Amtgard, a medieval/fantasy LARP and helped spread the word of foam-fighting across the country. So I’m about as well-rounded a gamer as can be.

Question: What other hobbies or activities do you take part in, other than playing video games?

Answer:*Well, I mentioned Amtgard, which was a huge part of my life for over 15 years. I helped run the club, wrote rules expansions for other players and traveled all over Texas helping bring mock-swordplay to every small town and large city we could find people to swing a foam sword at. I also have a massive collection of Games Workshop miniatures that I’ve painted and/or modified over the years. That’s actually one game I had more fun NOT playing. Painting and converting models was always more entertaining to me than actually pushing the mini across the table and rolling dice.

Question: What do you like the most about your favorite SOE game?

Answer:*So many things! I love the look and action of DCUO like no other game I’ve ever played. It moves and flows like playing a live-action comic book and you can’t get that feeling out of the other games in the genre. I’m also a huge contributor on the forums and love the community there, warts, trolls, and all. I have to say though; the absolute best thing to come of DCUO for me has been to meet the incredible guys and gals in Defenders Alliance. I played solo for months until I stumbled into their growing League, and have never looked back. I can’t imagine not gaming with these folks ever again. Truly the bonds of friendship we’ve cultivated have grown beyond anything I ever expected in a random grouping of like-minded people.

Question: What’s the first thing you do when you log into your game? Do you have a routine?

Answer:*Nope. No routine. Won’t start one, either. Other than saying “Howdy” to leaguemates who aren’t using voice chat and hollering out “HELLOOOOO METROPOLIS” in Shout, I don’t really stick to a schedule of things to do. One of the things that turned me off other MMO’s was the daily grind you were practically required to do to stay competitive. DCUO is a lot more casual-friendly than those games, so if I don’t want to run Challenge Modes for a couple of days, no harm, no foul.

Question: Let’s talk favorites… What is your favorite item? (Is there one you no longer use but keep around for nostalgic reasons?) What is your favorite zone? What is your favorite NPC? Do you have a favorite in-game memory?

Answer:*Favorite item so far is 97 DPS Brawler weapons, but only because I’m finally not gimped in combat.

Favorite zone has to be Open World Metropolis, bar none. The skyline, the scenery, the movement of cars and pedestrians … man, so motivational. I often just fly around in circles looking at things.

Favorite NPC is not a fair question, since I love all the Iconic Heroes and Villains equally. If I must pick a favorite, I am a huge fan of both Aquaman and the Martian Manhunter.

Question: What is the most in-game currency you have ever spent on purchasing a single item for one of your characters?

Answer:*I am so cheap with in-game currency, it’s not funny. Seriously, the most expensive things I’ve purchased in DCUO is 24 Soders at once – and that made me cringe on the inside. Often, I find myself wishing this frugality carried over to my bank account.

Question: If you could have a superpower or a spell/ability from the game you play, what would it be?

Answer:*So many to choose from! I guess I’d have to go with the Green Lantern Ring powers. Seriously, that’s like the power that can be all the other powers combined. I like to think, as a professional artist and life-long gamer, that a power ring in my hands would be pretty much the most awesome thing ever. I’d never sit in Houston traffic again, that’s for sure!

Question: If there was one thing you could tell the SOE community about yourself, what would it be?

Answer:*Couple of things, really.

First off, I’m not as mean as I come off on occasion. I try to be a bastion of good news and helpfulness, but the negativity found on most forums gets under my skin from time to time. During those moments, I realize that Mr Happy Tex goes right out the window and I can be downright ornery. I don’t want to make anything but friends, and to those folks I’ve torqued off over the last few months, I hope you understand where I’m coming from and accept my hasty apologies as quickly as you take offense at my hasty words.

Secondly, I’m not really a cowboy. I just play one on TV.
