Since its first edition, held in Uruguay in 1930, the FIFA competition for excellence has not stopped growing in prestige and popularity.
The unique idea of making the best teams on the planet compete for the title of world champions was made possible by a group of visionary French football administrators, led in 1920 by the innovative Jules Rimet. The original golden trophy received the name of Jules Rimet and was vied for three times in the 1930s, before the Second World War interrupted the competition for twelve years.
After resumption, the World Cup progressed rapidly to acquire its undisputed status as the biggest sporting event in the modern world. The World Cup was later held in Europe and America successively from 1958. The World Cup marked a new milestone when, in May 1996, the FIFA Executive Committee decided that the 2002 event would be organized jointly by Korea and Japan.
Since 1930, the 18 tournaments have seen only seven different winners. However, the World Cup has been marked by surprising moments that have contributed to the history of football, as with the U.S. victory over England in 1950, the defeat of Italy by North Korea in 1966, the rise of Cameroon in the 80s and its victory over the defending champion Argentina in the opener of the 1990 edition.
Currently, the World Cup is able to hypnotize the public world-wide. The tournament held in France in 1998 reached a global audience of over 3,700,000,000 people, of which approximately 1,300,000,000 followed the final match. More than 2.7 million spectators flocked to watch the 64 matches in the French stadia.
After all these years and after all the changes that have occurred, the focus of the FIFA World Cup remains the same: the shiny gold trophy that embodies the aspirations of all footballers.
Free Realms prepares to welcome the World Cup with great joy and excitement. Play Goal Time in Free Realms with friends and family, challenge them to a game of 3 on 3 and test your skills and abilities. If you see the Ambassadors in game, feel free to challenge them to a game or two. I hope everybody enjoys the World Cup and that your favorite team wins. Sometimes it does not go the way we want it to go, but you can always jump into Free Realms and gather your friends for a friendly match.
Wishing you luck amigos/as!
