MayDay, MayDay it’s Walpurgis Night
By Nedda Hosseinpour, German Community Relations Representative
The night of April 30th to May 1st is an interesting night in some parts of Europe. It’s called Walpurgis Night (Walpurgisnacht) and it is the night of the witches and wizards!
They say that witches and other occult folks used to hold a meeting at the “Blocksberg”, the highest mountain of an area called Harz. Stories also say that the witches fly around on their witches’ brooms, dance and sing around a bonfire while awaiting the arrival of spring.
The name Walpurgisnacht comes from Saint Walburga, a daughter of a wealthy family. Her canonization by Pope Adrian II is held and celebrated on May 1st. Some miracle narratives of Walpurga made her known as the patron saint of various cities.
These days Walpurgisnacht is celebrated by lighting huge bonfires, playing pranks, hiding possessions, dancing around a May Pole and going into bars and clubs (an event called “Dance into May”). People in some parts of Europe even wear Halloween-like costumes to scare away evil spirits.
In some countries, May 1st, also called May Day, is not only a cultural holiday but is also the international Workers’ Day and therefore an official holiday!
The SOE Community team wishes everyone a happy Workers’ Day, Walpurgis Night and a great Dance into May!!!
