Has it already been a year? My, how time flies! On April 28th, 2009, fairly late into the evening, Free Realms went live to the world. It was an exciting time, in spite of how tired we were. Servers opened and regardless of the late hour, they began to fill up. Everything went smoothly. When the next day rolled around, it seemed like everyone was giving Free Realms a try.
For me, the story of Free Realms began long before April 28th. It was a few years earlier when John Smedley announced to the company that we would produce a game aimed at kids called Free Realms. Soon after I saw the first concept art and I was hooked! I had to get on this project! Being on the Community Team, I don’t get too involved in a game until it’s closer to launch, so I waited. And waited. And waited. I kept up on the development. Talked to the producers. Scoured the internal storage drives for more concept art.
The game had a fun slant to it, so very different from my time on Star Wars Galaxies. What could be more different from the cold hard edge of science fiction than a world of trees and Robgoblin tricksters? After six years of working with lightsabers, it was a big culture shock to become the Community Manager for Free Realms, but since I’m still a kid at heart, it was an easy transition.
In the twelve months since the game launched, I’ve had a great time. We’ve been running weekly in-game events and our Tuesday House Parties are a great way to highlight the fantastic creativity of the players.
I can’t believe it’s been a year. I can’t wait to see what the next one brings!
